Letters, 1863-1866.

A collection of letters addressed to William Henry Terwilliger of Kingston, New York from Theodore and Zadoc Rhodes who were serving in the Union Army at the time. The brothers wrote about their experiences of being stationed along the Mississippi River in Louisiana, in which their regiment was engaged in patrolling the river. The letters also contain news about fellow soldiers, anecdotes relative to General Grant's victories at Vicksburg and Lookout Mountain, and comments on President Lincoln and 1864 election campaign.

Zadoc and Theodore Rhodes enlisted for military service at Plattskill (Ulster County), New York, August 1862, and were both mustered in as privates shortly thereafter. Theodore would attain the rank of sergeant in June 1864, and was reported to have died in Ulster County, New York, November 11,1864. Zadoc Rhodes attained the rank of commissary sergeant in September 1864, and mustered out with his regiment at Augusta, Georgia, October 23, 1865. From the description of Letters, 1863-18...
